Great article! I am leery of the mega-senior communities, like Charlestown, having watched an aunt and uncle age there for at least 15 years. Though they're now benefitting from needed elder care (they are now in their 90s!), it was painful for me to see them in such a huge bubble--never having to leave the "campus" if they didn't want to. I hope to age in place in my own home.

Thanks, Jackie. I'm with you, but clearly the alternatives take lots of work to set up and maintain.

I have been searching for an independent living location in the Silver Spring area, as my family wants me closer to them. Having checked on this situation before for my mom, they had no idea the costs of the various locations. When I begin telling the cost of locations, they were shocked. We visited Riverwood and my granddaughter was overwhelmed I just smiled. don't get excited, I did not find one, so I am stuck here for a while. With that in mind, have we developed a group of people who can reach out to others when they feel alone and just need to talk or visit with someone? Remember, it doesn't have to be winter to need a warm voice. thx

Joan, the CHAI program might provide some solace. In the meantime, you have my number (in more ways than one).
