I've been volunteering 3-7 hours per week since 2010. It's a great way to make new friends, and it's the gift that keeps on giving [back] to your world and to yourself.
I love your review of the volunteer options and how people fit into the scene. Eye opening.
I'm volunteering again, this time as the docent for the Art Gallery at our thrift store that supports the animal shelter. It's a great way to connect with people and help the animals. I'm loving it! The "job" requires 4 hours any day I put myself on the schedule. So, I fit in days during the week when I'm not going to be batty-crazy. I better understand the challenges the thrift store manager has.
This really resonated with me. I find that after almost 8 years of retirement and what I would call episodic volunteering, volunteering is no longer as satisfying or even as interesting as it has been. Now to figure out my next volunteering phase and what that will look like.
Don, another great article. I watched older volunteers come to our schools and the light in their eyes as they read to children or whatever their activity was. Our Mom volunteered for years while working and after. It perhaps helped her live to 101 because she always had purpose.

Thanks, Wendl. Good to know.

It sounds like the perfect match for your passions. Congratulations!

That describes my experience as well.
Pure wisdom!

Your mother was a treasure and a great example for us all.
